Sibenik

Šibenik is a city with a deep-rooted history that is reflected in its architecture and culture. Founded by Croats in the 9th century, it played an important role in Dalmatian history. Particularly influential was the Venetian rule in the 15th and 16th centuries, which left the city some of its most impressive buildings.
Sights & highlights
A stroll through Šibenik's old town is like a journey back in time. The narrow, winding alleyways, steep stone steps and small hidden squares give the town a unique flair. The numerous churches and palaces from the Venetian era are particularly worth seeing.
- The Cathedral of St. James is Šibenik's most important landmark and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was built entirely of stone, without mortar or other binding agents. Particularly noteworthy are the 71 faces carved in stone on the outer façade - portraits of citizens of the town whose identity remains a mystery to this day.
- St. Michael's Fortress, located high above the old town, was once used for defense and is now a breathtaking open-air concert stage overlooking the sea.
- The fortress of St. Nicholas, a sea fortress on a small island off the coast, is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and impresses with its unusual triangular shape.
- The Barone Fortress, situated slightly above the town, offers one of the best views of Šibenik and its surroundings. Today it houses a modern museum with interactive exhibitions about the history of the town and its defenses.
- Another highlight is the Ethnographic Museum, which provides an insight into the life of the Dalmatian population in past centuries.
- Those interested in Šibenik's maritime heritage should visit the Maritime Museum in the old town hall. Here you will find fascinating exhibitions about the region's long maritime history.
- In addition to its historical significance, Šibenik is also a city of culture. The famous International Children's Festival takes place here every year, where young artists from all over the world fill the streets of the old town with music, dance and theater.
- Also very special, is the Medieval Fair, where Šibenik delves into its past and comes to life with historical markets, jugglers and traditional food.
Beaches & activities
Šibenik is situated on a beautiful coastline with numerous beaches that are ideal for both families and those seeking peace and quiet.
- Banj Beach, right in front of the old town, attracts visitors not only with the clear waters of the Adriatic, but also with a spectacular view of the historic skyline.
- The Solaris Beach Resort is a true paradise for families. Here you will find several beaches, a water park with slides, playgrounds and numerous leisure activities for children.
- For quieter days on the beach, the islands of Zlarin or Prvić are ideal. These small, car-free islands can be reached quickly by ferry and offer beautiful bays with turquoise-blue water.
Boat and day trips
The area around Šibenik offers numerous opportunities for boat trips and day trips.
- The Krka National Park is an absolute highlight. With its spectacular waterfalls, it is one of the most beautiful natural wonders in Croatia.
- The famous Skradinski Buk waterfalls even invite you to swim at certain points, while well-developed wooden walkways lead through the green paradise.
- Another worthwhile destination is the island of Zlarin, which is known for its coral diving tradition.
Dalmatian cuisine in Šibenik
- The most famous restaurant is Pelegrini, which has been awarded a Michelin star. It offers a modern interpretation of regional cuisine, with creative fish and meat dishes.
- Konoba Nostalgija offers authentic, traditional cuisine.
- Worth a visit, is also the Tinel restaurant, which is known for its homemade specialties and friendly, family atmosphere. Especially recommended: the “peka” dishes - meat or fish, slowly cooked under a cast-iron bell.
Šibenik may be less well-known than Dubrovnik or Split, but that is precisely what makes it so charming. The city offers an impressive combination of history, culture, nature and beach experiences - far away from mass tourism.
