3 Types of Boating Vacations – Which One Is Right for You?

Not all boating vacations are the same. Many people automatically associate them with sailing—but there are different ways to spend time on the water. And each one offers a different experience. At BRAIN Yachting, this is a central focus of our consultation: not just choosing a destination, but selecting the type of trip that truly suits you.

The 3 main types of boating vacations

1. Sailing vacation

A sailing vacation focuses on the experience of being in nature. The boat is primarily powered by the wind, which means that speed and route aren’t entirely up to you. Typically, you’ll travel at about 5–8 knots—that’s roughly 9–15 km/h—and cover around 30–70 km per day, depending on wind conditions.

Sailing itself is an active pursuit: setting sails, adjusting course, and keeping an eye on the weather are all part of the experience. At the same time, it creates a sense of slowing down as you adapt to the rhythm of nature. This type of boating vacation is ideal for anyone who wants to travel mindfully and seeks the feeling of freedom on the water.

2. Catamaran Vacation

More space, more stability, and a very smooth ride. Often featuring large sunbathing areas and an open living space, it makes it perfect for families or groups. Especially for those who want to combine comfort and relaxation.

It has two hulls, which makes it particularly stable on the water—meaning less rocking and greater overall comfort. Its speed is usually 6–10 knots (approx. 11–18 km/h), with daily distances of about 50–100 km. Although the catamaran is also powered by the wind, the focus here is less on sporty sailing and more on a relaxed travel experience. Ideal for anyone who wants to experience nature without sacrificing comfort.

3. Motorboat Vacation

This type of vacation offers the most flexibility. Here, it’s not the wind but the motor that sets the pace. This gives you much greater independence and allows for flexible planning. Longer distances can be covered more quickly, and multiple destinations can be explored in a short time. Speeds of 15–40 knots (approx. 28–75 km/h) are common, making daily distances of 100–300 km or more possible. The focus here is less on the “experience of sailing” and more on exploring many destinations. However, motorboats are louder and consume more fuel. Perfect for anyone who wants to see a lot.

The decision about which type of boating vacation suits you and your crew depends less on experience and more on how you want the week to feel. Active or relaxed, quiet or varied—that’s exactly what determines the right choice. That’s why we at BRAIN Yachting always recommend: First define the vibe, then choose the boat.
